There’s a lot of things I like about this book. The future dystopian post-war post-democratic divided-by-personality Chicago society is definitely interesting. I also like the main character, Tris. She is capable and confident, but also makes mistakes and is hotheaded and weak.
There are also some things I don’t like about this book. Here be spoilers. First, the whole fear simulation thing? Kinda ridiculous. The idea that we have somewhere between seven and fifteen or so fears, such as fear of heights or fear of moths, I find very hard to buy. Plus, seems to display a complete lack of knowledge of how trauma functions.
The sexism. It’s subtle - there’s a lot of strong women characters and they’re given equal plays with the guys in things like fighting, climbing up high places, and shooting guns. But there is this one scene that made me cringe. Spoilers, obvi: when Christina asks Tris if she can be a girly girl for a minute because she wants to tell her about a kiss. Made me roll my eyes so hard. Way to buy into stereotypes.
Also. There is not a single queer character in the story, and it’s super white. Some people are described as having dark skin or almond-shaped eyes (but no one is described as having white or pale skin - surprise!) but otherwise race isn’t mentioned. I suppose people are supposed to be beyond racism in this future world (but not sexism?) which is a noble goal, sure. But mentioning people’s non-white characteristics and not mentioning white characteristics, plus giving everyone super anglo names (Christina, Will, Albert, etc) makes me think this book is making an attempt at being colour-blind, and failing. Oh, and of course, not a mention of indigenous peoples in any way.
Also, one thing that I found was completely missing: weather. I don’t know if that’s deliberate, if in this future world there is no weather, but I have no idea if the book took place in summer or winter. And, a lack of knowledge about proper tattoo aftercare.
also mega spoilers here: I found the in the end deaths to be too much. If there really wasn’t another way then it should have been shown better. I found the ending to be very rushed.
However! As I mentioned, there were a lot of things I like. Like, the plot, the main character, strong supporting characters, and balance in terms of strength and weakness. I look forward to reading the next installment - Insurgence - which thankfully I shouldn’t have to wait too long for. Overall I give it two and a half stars.
